Deer Processing Class at Cabela’s a Success!

Reading PA – Rick Fetrow, HSH president, professional butcher and HSH Meat Processor recently offered a deer processing class entitled “Deer Processing 101” at Cabela’s in Hamburg PA. Cabela’s is a generous sponsor to the Hunters Sharing the Harvest program and provides the setting for this popular event. Fetrow has been involved with the HSH program for many years and offers this class in an effort to reach out to meat processors interested in getting involved with the HSH program. “One of our best resources that accounts for the success of this 22 year old program, other than the donated deer meat, are our deer processors. They have to sign up, get inspected and agree to the rules and terms of the program but, without them HSH would be non-existent. Some even donate their time and refrigerated storage for our processed venison waiting to be picked up by the food banks. During any given season we have 90-120 on board that participate in the program.” said Rick, “and we are always in need of more!  Handouts and information on how to to join the HSH family were available at the seminar as well as on the website www.sharedeer.org

HSH donated venison is distributed only as ground meat. Rick’s butcher seminar takes it a little further. He demonstrates basic field dressing, skinning, capping and how to make basic steak cuts. Thanks Rick for the lesson! A picture of Rick during one of his classes can be found on the sharedeer website when you click on MEAT PROCESSORS.
